Whiteboard animation videos are often underrated because of their simplicity. However, when done right, they can be incredible marketing tools that can help businesses achieve all kinds of goals, from educating customers to showing investors everything your solution can offer, and more.

I know you’re probably skeptical, so I decided to write an entire case study about a whiteboard explainer video that helped a pharmaceutical company raise a million dollars! Sounds pretty amazing, right? Well, let me show you exactly how it was done 😉.

What Is a Whiteboard Animation Video?

Whiteboard videos are a unique explainer video style designed to convey your message in a simple and straightforward manner, making it easier to understand, thanks to their particular visuals.

Their simplicity and dynamicity have become a synonym for creativity, allowing people to transform even the dullest and most complicated topics into enjoyable and memorable videos that boost lead generation, brand awareness, and conversions.

This effectiveness in simplifying complex topics and engaging audiences plays a key role in the popularity of animated whiteboards, and nowadays, they’re used in a wide range of contexts, including education, marketing, training, and communication.

MedVector Whiteboard Animation Case Study

Our friends at MedVector reached out to us to create a whiteboard explainer video that could help them raise funds. So, the entire team quickly got down to business! After a couple of weeks of hard work (and a lot of coffee, as usual), this is what we came up with:

1. Company Overview

MedVector is a leading healthcare telemedicine platform that connects existing clinical trial sites with qualified subjects from anywhere in the world through treating physicians. Their goal is to transform the clinical trial marketplace by accelerating FDA approval and increasing clinical trial participation through telemedicine.

2. Objectives and Challenges

MedVector needed an animated explainer video that could attract investors and raise funds – that was the marketing goal.

But the video’s target audience posed a challenge, as it was comprised of a variety of people: investors, doctors, new employees, vendors, attorneys, hospitals, FDA, and pharma companies. So, how could we address them all and still effectively convey MedVector’s message? Time for some brainstorming!

3. Storyboard

The client was interested in exploring a whiteboard animation style to do that, so we created a storyboard with specific representations of possible scenarios and obstacles that clinicians might go through.

We also introduced an example of a patient to show how MedVector can tackle those challenges. This way, we could simplify the platform’s complexity and explain how it works in a way that anyone could easily understand while highlighting how it’s better than other similar options out there.

4. Illustrations

Following the whiteboard animation style, the illustrations were inspired by marker drawings on a whiteboard surface, and all the assets responded to a cartoon style, which helped us recreate spaces and props in a realistic manner.

Our goal was to explain a complex process in a visual way that’s fluid and engaging enough to catch the viewer’s interest and keep it throughout the entire piece.

5. Character Design

The characters are, of course, also based on the idea of marker drawings, with abstract proportions and bold facial expressions to add a more emotional and human aspect to the piece.

6. Animation

The animation for this whiteboard video results from the combination of a cartoon style for some of the characters’ actions and a 2D animation for the drawing hand and the smooth transitions between scenes.

7. Final Result

The video made a huge impact among investors, allowing the company to raise almost a million dollars and gain 555 investors! The visual explanation and the patient example allowed their prospects to get a clear picture of MedVector’s potential applications and made them excited about all the possibilities their funding could bring to life.

Frequently Asked Questions about Whiteboard Animation

Before I let you go, I’d like to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about whiteboard explainer videos:

1. Is Whiteboard Animation Hard?

While the whiteboard video production process is not as complex as it is with other video styles, it’s still a recipe you need to get right if you want to transform your message into a compelling and engaging animated narrative.

Even if you don’t have professional drawing skills, you can start making your video with simple online tools and templates. Yes, the results might be a bit basic in the beginning, but with practice and patience, you’ll be able to start exploring more advanced techniques and create awesome whiteboard explainer videos.

2. Is Whiteboard Animation Free?

There are plenty of tools that allow you to make whiteboard videos directly in your browser for free or for a small subscription fee.

However, a professional whiteboard animation explainer typically costs between $5,000 and $10,000 per minute (the animation cost can always vary according to your needs). This might sound like a big investment for some, but if you think about MedVector’s success case and the 1 million dollars they raised, the ROI (return on investment) is huge!

3. How Long Does It Take to Make a Whiteboard Video?

In our case, a professional whiteboard animation takes us roughly 9 weeks from start to finish. Of course, the production process can be adjusted to your needs, and it might be possible to have the asset ready in 4 weeks. However, this will carry a production cost increase to accommodate the increased production effort necessary to meet tight deadlines.

4. Is Whiteboard Animation Outdated?

Well, as you can probably see by the results of this whiteboard video we created for MedVector, the style is not outdated at all! Whether this style works for you will ultimately depend on your marketing goals, your audience’s preferences, and the video’s quality.

Wrapping Up!

And that’s how our whiteboard animation video helped MedVector raise almost a million dollars! Pretty cool, right? We’re very proud of the results, so I hope you enjoyed taking a peek behind the scenes and learning more about the production process. Animated whiteboards are, in my opinion, completely underrated! They open the door to wonderful opportunities to connect with your audience and effectively convey your message through charming cartoon characters. So, what do you think? Ready to give them a try?
